Evaluation It’s surprising what a light, unrestrictive upper can do to your perception of a shoe’s weight. Take the new 829. It looks and rides as if it’s an ounce lighter than it is. That makes it feel as though it’s right near the high-performance 300g mark – even though it has a midsole that’s substantial and supportive enough for everyday use by lighter runners.
It’s a world away from the old 828, which was in fact only 9g heavier. New Balance has stripped away the restrictive leather overlays on the upper, which makes for a much smoother fit and a more natural, flexible feel in the forefoot. The midsole and outsole of the shoe are similar to the previous shoes in the 820 series – low to the ground for a responsive feel, with smooth rear- and forefoot cushioning and a plastic stability web for midfoot support. The differences in the 829 over the 828: there’s a bigger cushioning insert under the heel, and the stability web has been improved to give nearly as much stability as a small medial post.
In short With a quick forefoot feel, smooth, responsive cushioning and a decent base of support, the 829 is a good option for fast everyday training for lighter runners, or for speedwork and races for heavier runners. It’s a big improvement over the 828.
